Technician 5 (T/5, Tech 5) was an enlisted rank in the American Army during WWII. The holder of this rank was at pay grade 5, the same as a corporal. They were addressed as "corporal" but did not have the authority to give orders to privates, as a corporal did. This rank was awarded to men trained in technical specialties, such as radio or engine mechanics, for example. The insignia of a T/5 resembled a corporals - both had two chevrons - but the T/5 had a large capital "T" below his chevrons, making him easily distinguishable. The next step up for a T/5 was to become a T/4, the equivalent of a buck sergeant, with three chevrons, and a capital "T" for a T/4. Army pay grades were the reverse of today's, with the highest enlisted number (7) being the lowest pay grade.

Is the World War 2 US Army rank T5 equivalent to a Sergeant?

On January 8, 1942, Technician Third Class (T/3), Technician Fourth Class (T/4), and Technician Fifth Class (T/5) were added to the rank insignia. On September 4, 1942, a "T" was added to the standard chevron design that corresponded with that grade. A technician was not addressed as one such, but rather as the neighboring rank in its pay grade (T/5 as Corporal; T/4 as Sergeant; T/3 as Staff Sergeant). A technician did not have the authority to give commands or issue orders. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_enlisted_rank_insignia_of_World_War_II

What is a technician 4th grade rank?

In the US Army during World War 2, there were two paths from which you could advance. There was the way of which you go to Corporal, to Sergeant, to Staff Sergeant and so on. But there was also the Technicians path. This went from Technician Grade 5, equivalent to Corporal, abbreviated T/5. Then Technician Grade 4, equivalent to Sergeant, abbreviated T/4. These replaced "specialists" and were replaced by specialists at a later date after the war. However their roles, varied. A technician is mostly seen as a mechanic or combat engineer. This is not correct, they ranged from cooks, to clerks, and medics. How exactly were they assigned? Sometimes, the same way as the regular chain of command, or sometimes they would be assigned to a unit. For example, a medic for a platoon.

Technician Fifth Grade, or "T-5" was the US Army's attempt to recognize its members with a technical skill with a higher rank & more pay. Used from 1942 until 1948, the rank chevron of a T-5 was that of a Corporal, but with a letter "T" just beneath the lower stripe. Richard V. Horrell WW 2 Connections
