A tenement is usually a reference to a poor part of a city, where housing is intensive and not very good, in the UK it often referred to blocks of flats, built to house people after WW2 and now considered bad living accommodation

In many areas the term tenement is used informally to mean a run-down and often overcrowded apartment house, or unit within the same, especially in an economically depressed section of a large city.

However, tenement is an old common law term with several meanings depending on the jurisdiction and the situation. The following are examples of the various different meanings:

  • Any property that has a permanent nature such as land, buildings, rights attached thereto and rents and profits therefrom.
  • Any right of use over the property of another such as an easement.
  • A building with rooms and/or apartments that can be leased for residential purposes and may be in a rundown condition.
  • Any kind of real property held by one person from another e.g. by renting or leasing.
  • In old deeds it meant any building on the property.
  • The meaning may change according to the laws in any given jurisdiction.
