A towboat is a boat designed for pushing barges or car floats.
Towboats are characterized by a square bow with steel knees for pushing and powerful engines. They are most often seen on inland waterways and western rivers where they can push more than 50 large barges lashed together into a tow of varying shapes and sizes. Towboats that travel long distances (linehaul) include living quarters for the crew. Outside of the USA towboats are usually referred to as "push boats" or "pushers".

If you are referring to a towboat, the majority of a boat is actually the engine room. infront of the engine room you will have a deck locker, a galley, a crew lounge ussually, and maybe a bedroom or two. on the second floor will be rooms. above on the third floor you will have the wheel house with captain in it.
600ft locks allow for 6 barges to go through along with the boat or 9 barges by themselves.Upgrading to 1200 foot chambers would allow the boat and 15 barges to go through without breaking tow. Would take locking from and hour and half to about half an hour and make it much easier on the deck crew as only two crew members would be needed instead of three.=
Line boat captains make more than a tug at a small port.
