They have many good features such as the terminals of the power amps are directly connected to the loudspeaker drive units and the bass and treble are filtered at a much lower signal level. There are also many downsides to active speakers such as the cost.
Bose surround sound does not compare favorably to Altec Lansing. The speakers produced sound that was mediocre at best and had too little bass and too much treble as compared with the Altec Lansing speakers.
This is a mostly a matter of personal opinion but I find the 2 way speakers to be less "harsh" with less screeching treble. Brand name can make a big difference as well, I personally prefer JVC 2way speakers as they have excellent vocal reproduction and a very reasonable price.
