In drug terms, a "trigger" refers to anything that might tempt a recovering addict or alcoholic to relapse and start using again. For example, watching a movie or TV show that depicts people snorting cocaine, or having cocktails at a bar. Or, just walking by a bar and looking in the window at all the people drinking. Or, seeing one of those tiny plastic bags (the kind drugs are sold in) lying discarded on the sidewalk. Or smelling marijuana smoke in the air.

Basically, anything that would cause a recovering addict to start craving drugs again is a trigger.
