Example Question
Megan has collected information from people in her year group about which science people prefer. Complete the two-way table to show her information.
Biology Chemistry Physics Total
Girls 20 15 50 (20 for Biology, 15 for Chemistry and 50 is the total)
Boys
Total 40 33 100 ( 40 for Biology, 33 for Chemistry and 100 is the total)
First, we can work out how many boys were asked in the survey. To do this, we
take the number of people asked (100) away from the number of Girls asked (50). 100-50 = 50. 50 boys were asked in the survey.
We can work out that 27 people like Physics because 40 + 33 = 73
100 - 27 =73. From there we can see that 12 boys like physics since 15 girls like Physics. 15 + 12 = 27.
Next, we can see that 20 boys like Biology since 20 girls like Biology and
20 + 20 = 40.
To work out how many girls like Biology, we add up the total of girls that preferred Biology (20) and the total of Girls that like Physics (15), add them together and work out what we need to add to the total (35) to make the total of 50. In this case, it's 15. So 15 girls like Chemistry.
We can see that 18 Boys like Chemistry since 33 - 15 = 18.
So this is what your completed Two-Way table should look like:
Biology Chemistry Physics Total
Girls 20 15 15 50
Boys 20 18 12 50
Total 40 33 27 100
You will then be asked questions from this table like:
' How many Girls were in the survey?' (50)
' How many Girls prefer Biology?' (20)
' What is the difference between the total of Boys who prefer Chemistry and the number of Boys who prefer Physics?'(6)
