Biomass is the waste produced by cattle and other farm animals, human's sewage and wastage from crops. This, as it decomposes, releases methane (called biogas in this context) which can be stored and used to cook with or heat water.

Biogas is much more common in LEDC's (less economically developed countries) as it is very self sustainable and cheap to install with help from aid agencies. It provides an alternative to chopping down trees for fires.
