Shell Plating
Compartmentalization. If a pariticular room is damaged, because of compartmentalization or subdivision of the ship, each section can be sealed off. This maintains water-tight integrity and allows the ship to continue it's mission without being affected.
the regulations is that it has to be 1/20th behide the bow of the ship and it has to be water tight

the oil tanker is the ship in which there are big tanks for oil and container ship takes the goods packed in the containers which are totally water prof and air tight
Osmosis
These were steel bulkheads with special doors through the ship. Unfortunately the iceberg ripped open five of these at the front end of the ship.
The safest place on a ship during a tornado (or waterspout as they are called on a body of water) would be an interior room in the ship away from windows.
Bulkheads are water-tight walls or divisions inside a ship. They keep water that is seeping in in one section instead of filling the whole ship. They also help strengthen the vessle. And (bonus!) the can help contain a fire and stop the flame from spreading all thoughout the ship.
The ship was designed and built to stay afloat if four watertight compartments were breached, but the iceberg breached five compartments, so the ship couldn't stay afloat
A private room on a ship is a cabin.
