Tornadoes are the strongest whirlwinds by any measure. Although such cases are rare, the most violent tornadoes can produce wind gusts to over 300 mph. The highest recorded wind speed was 302 mph in the F5 tornado that hit the Oklahoma City area on May 3, 1999. Other tornadoes may have produced higher gusts that were never measured.

Other whrilwinds, though, cannot produce winds anywherenear this, rarely breaking 70 mph.
