Whitetail was and probably still is the hardest animal to hunt in North America. Some hunters go there whole life without killing the trophy whitetail buck. They arent that great at sight- but they can see movement EXTREMELY well, and can hear you from a long way away, and have a high sense of smell. Hearing is probably there best sense. Smell isn't too far behind which is where a lot of hunters mess up. They don't think they need scent cover, and the deer never come out.

According to research the best time of year to hunt a whitetail buck is in the winter. The reason that this is the best time of year is because in the winter there is a lack of food. It is also very cold. The buck's only concern at this moment in time is to eat as much as they can in order to gain weight and survive through the winter. This means that buck's become predictible which makes it a lot easier to hunt a whitetail buck.
Deers run away at the first sign of danger, although the male deers could charge or attack with their antlers. But in general the males only use their antlers to compete among each other, so the deers mainly just runaway to protect themselves
