In a general sense, wilderness can be any natural area that doesn't have much human development or presence. Some people might even think of a park, or an area of woods in back of their house as being wilderness.

The United States also has a legal definition of wilderness created by the 1965 Wilderness Act. Lands designated as Wilderness under the National Wilderness Preservation System are protected from human development that they might maintain their primitive character for perpetuity. In this sense, a wilderness is any of the 757 areas currently included in the National Wilderness Preservation system.
