Why How does zidovudine work against the HIV?

I do not know the specifics of how zidovudine works against HIV but i may be able to help/steer you in the right direction. This drug comes under the category of nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI's). This category of drugs contain faulty versions of the nucleotides which is needed for reverse transcription of viral RNA to viral DNA withing the host cell of the HIV virus. The faulty nucleotides are used by the reverse transcriptase enzyme in HIV therefore the viral DNA that is made from viral RNA cannot be built accurately, therefore the viral DNA cannot be transferred into the cell's nucleus correctly leading to the inability for the HIV virus to replicate.Hope this helped you!
