if you are referring to the surname of Ginn - in Australia, this name can come from native aboriginal darug tribes. 'ginn' came from the aborginal word for woman but the whites turned it into being quite degoratory in nature. It is pronounced with a hard G. it actually comes from a particular tribe of about 1500 people in the south sydney to marickville area that were all but wiped out by smallpox. if you have no possible ties to aboriginality then it is also welsh & french derived & stems from a word that translate to being 'of skill, ability' roll them together and you have a 'skillful woman' lol - that's a joke
Nicky Winmar, of St Kilda. It was Round 4, 1993. They were playing Collingwood at Collingwood's home ground - Victoria Park - and Winmar had been putting up with racist taunts from Collingwood supporters all day. Then, he kicked a goal, turned to the Collingwood cheer squad, lifted his jumper and pointed to his skin. It was sheer magic. The photo was in every paper across Australia, and I think, even made into T-shirts.
It is not known exactly how many indigenous men went over seas with the first AIF in 1914 but it is known that at least 300 aboriginal men fought in world war 1. Of these approxomately 45 died and 59 were severly wounded. The number of indigenous people was most likely much higher although many of them pretended to be Maoris to hide there aboriginality.
I think the question should be 'Who is an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person?'Since the early 1980's the Australian Federal Government has used a three point working definition to enable people to establish their eligibility for specific Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs. According to that definition an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person is someone who:is of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, identifies himself or herself as an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander, andis accepted as such by the Indigenous community in which he or she lives. Each requirement must be satisfied. Physical appearance and lifestyle are irrelevant. Please refer to the following:Gibbs v Capewell and Others, 54 FCR 503M. They got better and also The Whitlam government in particular encouraged a variety of racial organizations, most importantly the National Aboriginal Consultative Committee (founded in 1973, from 1977 renamed the National Aboriginal Conference). These organizations contributed to a growing strength and pride in Aboriginality. Early in the period Aborigines became known for their contributions to sport (boxer Lionel Rose, tennis player Evonne Goolagong Cawley); later Aborigines became celebrated in the fields of public administration (Charles Perkins, Patricia O'Shane), literature (Kath Walker, Colin Johnson, Sally Morgan), and politics (Neville Thomas Bonner, senator for Queensland 1971-83). Meanwhile various researchers had been expanding knowledge of the antiquity and richness of Aboriginal life, while others stressed the determination and resilience with which Aborigines had responded to European settlement (or, as it was increasingly called, invasion). Not all Aborigines accepted the right and capacity of white scholars to comprehend the tribal past, but this attitude itself affirmed their independence. School curricula began to provide sympathetic teaching of Aboriginal (or "Koori") culture to all Australians. Such policies reinforced a shift away from assimilationist ideas. This shift applied nationwide but had particular relevance in sustaining the surviving remnants of tribal life. In the late 20th century the number of Aborigines with some experience of traditional Aboriginal life was estimated to be about 10,000.
