The noun 'abstraction' is a word for the act or process of taking away or removing characteristics from something in order to reduce it to a set of essential characteristics; the quality of dealing with ideas rather than substance; artwork that does not represent the actual physical form of its subject.

In mathematics, abstraction is the process of extracting the underlying essence of a mathematical concept, removing any dependence on real world objects with which it might originally have been connected.

Abstracting is a process carried out by Quantity Surveyors following a take-off of materials. The process brings together all of the information gleaned from the take off into a structured easy to read format that can then be transferred into the bill of quantities under just one description.
