What are effects on the body from alcoholism?
Reddish color facial tone...this is from broken capillaries usually around the nose on the cheeks first, then spreads to entire neck and shoulders/chest - from years of alcohol abuse. Broken vessels in the eqophagous (throat) cause vomitting of blood, this is called esophageal varices. It can be deadly. The ends of the vessels can be cauterized, but the problem comes back if drinking doesn't stop. Long term alcoholic's bodies can have a hard round belly. Looks like a basketball inside. This is acites. Excess fluid in the abdomen. Another affect on the body is jaundice - yellowing of the white part of the eyes. Also, long abusers suffer from congitive impairments from the excessive build-up of amonia in the brain. Also stools can become greyish in color. Apetite is suppressed, weight loss is common. You can spot an alcoholic by the reddish color of face/neck, distended belly, and / or less-than-normal whiteness in eyes.
How does a person who has cirrhosis of the liver look?
To begin with, they would look "generally unwell", even to a person with no medical training. If you looked closer, you would be likely to see that the whites of their eyes are tinged yellow/yellowy green. Their skin may well also have this color tinge. They may also appear pale, but this can be difficult to judge depending upon how jaundiced they are. It is also possible that there may be scratch marks on the skin of the person, due to the itching which liver disease can cause. (Normally arms, legs and feet). As cirrhosis progresses, itching is likely to worsen. Unexplained bruising also occurs as liver function worsens, due to inhibited clotting function. They may appear to be carrying weight around their stomach, in a way which looks a little like a pregnancy bump, but higher up (true of men and women with cirrhosis, not just women). The bump will usually begin from directly under the ribcage, rather than lower down compared to pregnancy bumps. This bump can either be due to increased liver and spleen size, or due to abdominal acites (or both). As this progresses, unusual clothing choices may become more apparent (e.g elasticated trousers and/or baggy tops). Sometimes as cirrhosis progresses, the person may lose sensitivity to heat and end up feeling permanently cold. Hence you may notice them wearing more layers than you would consider normal. Other than their abdomen they may appear underweight/frail. They are likely to appear tired and lack the energy to do simple tasks. Their concentration may be lacking, resulting in silly or very strange mistakes. They may have put less care and attention into their appearance, tidiness of their home, or other things which they would normally take great care of. There is the possibility that they may be experiencing some hair-thinning. You may notice strands falling out down the back of their clothing. If you were to look at the person's palms, you may notice they are more mottled than normal. (Palmar erythema). The person's fingernails may also be weaker than normal.
