Passive vocabulary refers to words that a person understands when reading or listening, but may not use in their own speech or writing. Active vocabulary, on the other hand, includes words that a person can confidently use in their own communication. Building both passive and active vocabularies is essential for effective language skills.
Having a large vocabulary
C. Mooney has written: 'Active vocabulary 2'
Your understanding of a language can be devided into active and passive vocabulary. The active vocabulary consists of all the words you are able to use when writing or speaking. The passive vocabulary consists of all the words you are able to understand when you read or hear them. A language consists of many words that are seldomly used or complex. These will often belong to the passive vocabulary of many users. The more you practice any particular language, the bigger each group will grow, until a time when most words are passive knowledge. Then, with further praktice, the active vocabulary wil expand.
The average adult English speaker typically has a vocabulary of around 20,000 to 35,000 words. However, the active vocabulary—words they regularly use—tends to be smaller, often ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 words. Factors such as education, profession, and personal interests can significantly influence vocabulary size. Children and non-native speakers generally have smaller vocabularies, which expand with exposure and practice.
Active voice, third person, short simple declarative sentences, elementary school vocabulary as far as possible.
All language is focused on vocabulary. Without vocabulary there is no language.
Vocabulary is the basis of language. Your vocabulary is simply the number of words that you know. The bigger your vocabulary, the better you will be able to communicate, and to understand. Reading is one good way to improve your vocabulary.
