Air mail is an archaic term. The standard first class postage (.45) usually travels by air for that distance. For example a letter form LA to Nashville would go from your local post office to the main office in LA. From there to LAX where it would ride in the bottom of a passenger jet to Nashville airport. From the airport to the Nashville main office and then out to the local office responsible for delivering to the address.
If your letter was going from LA to San Diego then it might completely travel by truck from the main office to main office as more mail moves closer in and less goes out further.
The address is just the address. What makes it airmail is writing "airmail" on the envelope and paying airmail postage.
