alloying is a term which describes a material which, when introduced to another material will change its characteristics to make them advantageous to us. they are split into 2 categories, "Matrix's" and "reinforcement agent". For example with carbon fibre the matrix is the carbon and the reinforcement agent is a resin.

===========================================

alloying is the processing of mix two or more kinds of metals together (at least one kind of metal needed) to get better characteristics than sole metal. Moreover, the resin is not alloying, and the carbon and reinforcement agent is not alloy also. The best example of alloy, you can find on aluminum. The pure aluminum is soft and easy to hurt, but the aluminum alloy such as aluminum silicon alloy is very hard as the aluminum alloy frame of the window. In these days the alloying technology is developing faster and faster. Difference kinds of alloys appears everyday, and the processing is also developing fastly, such as the semi solid casting technology.

Is carbon an alloyed steel?

No. An alloy is an intimate mixture of 2 or more metals. Steels are actually regarded as being of 2 basic types - carbon and alloy. Carbon is an alloying element in carbon steels; there are other examples, such as: oxygen is regarded as an alloying element in zircaloy, silicon is an alloying element in aluminum and ferro-silicon, phosphorus in some types of bronze, etc. (not important if it is a metal or a non- metal).
