Every Muslim is obligated to pay a portion of his or her wealth for the benefit of the poor and needy. Zakat means purification and growth. Our possessions are purified by setting aside a portion for those in need. This also increases social welfare and encourages economic growth.
A Muslim may also donate more as an act of Sadaqah (voluntary charity), in order to achieve additional reward from Allah.

There are 5 Pillars of Islam
1. Shahada - Testimony - to believe and testify that there is no God but Allah and Muhammed is his final Messenger of God.
2. Salah - Prayer - to pray the compulsory five times prayer
3. Zakah - to pay the compulsory % of your wealth and savings to the poor. Normally 2.5% but it varies with some other wealth.
4. Sawm Ramadhan - Fasting the month of Ramadhan
5. Hajj - Pilgram to Mekkah once in your life if one can afford
