Like other ottomans, the Adirondack ottoman is used as a footrest when sitting in a char. The difference between a traditional ottoman and a Adirondack, is that the Adirondack is curved with one end beginning and chair seat height and tapering downwards so that the back of the legs and the knees are also supported too. Brookstone has a beautiful example of an Adirondack for use with a deck chair at http://www.brookstone.com/sl/product/1883-adirondack-ottoman.html
