The Atakapa or Attacapa people occupied the coastal and bayou areas of southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas until about 1800. Estimates of their numbers are around 3,500 in 1698 and just 175 in 1805. In 1908 there were only 9 Atakapa descendants left.
