through tiny sacks in the lungs called alveoli, the ribs expand out causing air to be pulled in. the air enters the lungs and waste is carried from the blood to the air in the lungs and oxygen is exchanged from the air into the alveoli to be absorbed into the blood

If you breathe through your mouth then many are absorbed into the moisture in your mouth (saliva).

It is much better to breathe through your nose, however, as it contains both mucus, which is much better at absorbing particles and small hairs which act as a kind of net for them, it also warms the air up much more.

Your respiratory tract has many thousands of glands that produce mucous. This sticky material picks up dust, dirt, smoke, bacteria and other tiny things you inhale. Also lining the tract are thousands of cells which have hair-like cilia which move the mucous up to your throat and you swallow it. The acids in the stomach digest the materials. If these hairs are destroyed by smoking or by another manner, you can not move the mucous and this problem is called COPD.

Where does filtration occur in the human body?

The liver breaks down harmful substances as well as non-harmful products such as the deamination of proteins, but the metabolites are put back into the blood circulation. The kidneys then filter these metabolites and other substances out of the blood, returning "cleaned" blood back to the body and harmful substances excreted in water and ultimately urine.

What are some examples of filtration?

There are three basic kinds of filtration, chemical, mechanical and biological. An example of chemical filtration would be the use of ferric oxide to adsorb phosphates. An example of mechanical filtration would be filter floss straining out larger particles from the water. An example of biological filtration would be nitrobacters on a sponge converting ammonia to nitrite.
