An aedicula is a small house or room, often used as a household shrine in Ancient Roman times, guarded by Roman deities protecting the house and family.
St. Peter's tomb is a site under St. Peter's Basilica that includes several graves and a structure that may have been built to memorialize the location of St. Peter's grave. St. Peter's tomb is near the west end of a complex of mausoleums that date between about AD 130 and AD 300. The grave that is reputed to be that of St. Peter lies at the foot of the aedicula beneath the floor.The tomb is located directly beneath the Papal Alter in the basicilica.
