'Alderman' is a word that has fallen into disfavour because it is considered to be sexist. It was often replaced by 'alderperson' but that term was considered cumbersome. 'Councillor' is being used more often today. An alderman/alderperson/councillor is a politician. More specifically, the term describes a municipal politician. This politician is a member of a council that usually includes a mayor and often other positions as well. The person is elected and serves for a certain period of time. The council is the governing body of a municipality, responsible for by-laws, etc. It provides municipal services such as police and fire, roads and sidewalks, water and sewers, etc. The members of council make the decisions about such services, and also make the decisions about how they will be financed, usually by property taxes.

Achieve your fitness goals without an expensive, monthly membership at a fitness center. Long before the popularity of working out in a climate controlled facility in front of flat screen televisions, good physical fitness could be maintained for free or at minimal expense. Listed are a few options to keep your wallet fat while trimming your waistline.Just WalkTake a walk and get some fresh air. Studies show that walking 20 to 30 minutes a couple of times a week aids in weight loss and the prevention of many other health related conditions. If the climate or your environment doesn’t support walking outdoors buy a used treadmill (there are plenty of them to be found) or join the growing number of people who are mall-walkers. The only cost to walking is the time it takes to do it.Home EquipmentArrange a few pieces of fitness equipment in a small corner of the room where you watch television or spend time with your family—equipment that is out of sight (in the basement or garage) is out of mind. Check the classifieds online and in the local newspaper, and garage sales for quality, in good working condition, fitness equipment. A variety of like-new equipment is available at a bargain. But, unlike the first owner, if you lose interest in using the latest “ab-cycler” you will have paid much less for it.YMCAMany YMCAs offer the same amenities and classes found in upscale fitness centers, but at a better price. And, it is still a not-for-profit organization, so some portion of your membership dollars are used to support charitable causes. Just like commercial fitness chains, classes, hours of operation, and onsite amenities like a spa or pool vary by location. The YMCA is also a great environment to introduce youngsters to the physical benefits of swimming, gymnastics, and participating in competitive sports.Government FacilitiesCall the mayor’s office or your local alderperson for information about government sponsored fitness programs in your area. Programs for senior citizens, physically challenged persons, and children are available in many places (there may be a small nominal fee). Park district pools are an option in the summer, and some locations have adult-only swim hours. If you live near a state college or university their facilities may also be available to the tax-paying public.HotelsHotels in your area that cater to business travelers may have onsite fitness facilities and spas. And, some of them allow non-guest access to use these amenities for a fee. But, the fees can be steep, so this option is best used as a short-term solution until you determine which of the more budget-friendly options is worthy of a long-term contract.[video=]
