Most systems can be retrofitted to R134a
R134a is the current alternative to R12. I have found Freeze12 put out by AutoRefrigerants.com. They say no retro-fitting is needed.
No, the A/C system on a 2004 uses R134a, an alternative to freon (R12) which was phased out in the 1990s.

Contains no (R12) Freon. Freon was banned in 1996.
R134a Freon is an oxymoron, Freon is R12 but the answer is yes, a subtle 'sweetish' odor
It came with R12 Freon. As R12 is cost prohibitive, have the unit converted to R134a refrigerant or a similar substitute.
