Ethics based solely on logic, reason and empathy and not from guilt, possible reward or punishment.

ex of atheist ethics.: I won't steal because I can empathize with someone who has lost something valuable. That feeling sucks. The thing I would have stolen may be extremely important to the victim on a sentimental or practical purpose.

religious ethics: The Bible told me not to steal... I might go to hell. Then again, (depending on religion) I can do it now, then confess my sin and tell the priest how very sorry I am and all will be forgiven by hail mary's.
