Best Answer

The oxidation number of an atom states how it shares its valence electrons with other elements (or ions or compounds). A neutral atom always has its oxidation number 0: it does not share any electrons. A cation has a positive oxidation number and that of anion is negative because they donate and attract electrons respectively.

What is the oxidation number on N2?

Oxidation numbers are defined for atoms, not molecules such as N2. The oxidation number of both atoms in a divalent elemental molecule is specified to be 0, as is the oxidation number of an atom of an element for which one atom constitutes a molecular unit.

In the compound Fe2O3 irons oxidation number is while oxygens oxidation number is 2?

The oxidation number of iron in this compound is 3. The oxidation numbers of the total oxygen atoms and the total iron atoms must be the same in a neutral compound. There are three oxygen atoms, giving a total for oxygen of 3 X 2 = 6. There are only two iron atoms; therefore, each one must have an oxidation number of 6/2 = 3.

What does the common oxidation number mean?

The common oxidation number means any number that indicates the charge of atoms when an electron is either lost, gained, or shared in a chemical bond. It is known as the ion's number. Also, oxidation numbers in all atoms in a compound must add up to zero.
