Automatic transfer switch
An ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) is an expensive auxiliary piece of equipment and depending on the standby situation, is not always used. In emergency situations when a power failure occurs certain establishments need instant recovery from no power. Hospitals, town water distribution systems fall into this category. Some of the less priority recovery establishments will use a manual transfer switch. This is where the operator will start the generator and then transfer the utility incoming power to the generator power to feed the load. Then you have the home owner generator that just needs the pull of a handle to start the generator and you just plug in the load. So to answer the question, not all generators need to be connected to an ATS; it depends on the situation the generator is used for.
ATS (automatic transfer system panel) it will transfer load from main power to emergency without operation when the power source drop below 80% or normal voltage while AMF (automatic main failure panel) this will substitute as main electricity source and reserve the generator if the main supply fail or down.
actually there are no difference between ATS and AMF panels, because all of new ATS panels are now AMF panels. The only things that AMF do more than ATS is to order the generating set to run after the main power source fail by sending start command to the generating set controller. These days all ATS are AMF panels they send start command to the generating set once main power source fail so they become AMF panels. AMF panels answered perfectly in this web site just write what is AMF panel?
