An aventail is the flap of adjustable part of the hood of chain mail, or, in a suit of solid armour, the movable front of the helmet, also known as the ventail.
When attached to a medieval helmet, an aventail is a chainmail curtain or neckguard that protects the wearer's neck and shoulders from direct strikes and slashing attacks. It adds an extra layer of defense against weapons such as swords, axes, and arrows, helping to prevent injuries to the vital areas of the head and neck.
