A black box is a small data recording device, located near the tail end of an aeroplane (The tail is the part of a plane most likely to survive an accident). They are used to help investigators find the reason why a plane might crash. Black boxes record hundreds of different flight data, including altitude, cruising speed etc. They are very tough- virtually indestructible.

Contrary to their name, black boxes are not black. They are orange, to be easily located in the wreckage of a crashed plane. No one knows why this is.
