The Madagascan Elephant Bird was a very tall bird that was similar to an ostrich in body shape and as tall as an elephant (11.5 feet), hence their name.
They walked through the jungles of Madagascar and looked a bit scary. In fact, some people think they walked and ran just like a velocipede (a feathered dinosaur). However, they were actually very gentle birds and completely vegetarian. They ate leaves, plants and herbs in the jungle.
These magnificent creatures became extinct in the 16th century due to hunting. These wonderful birds had very little defence against man, despite being bigger than man, other than either running away or swiping with their talons, which didn't help often because they were peaceful birds who never attacked anything.
The last known remains of the Madagascan Elephant Bird are kept in several museums over the world.
