Enzymes are any of several complex proteins that are produced by cells and act as catalysts in specific biochemical reactions. They help break down foods you eat and play a role in major chemical reactions. For example, without enzymes we could not break down milk because it contains lactose. People that don't have the enzyme lactase are lactose intolerant. This shows how enzymes are so important to living things.

Enzymes are proteins that catalyze chemical reactions. With out enzymes we wouldn't be here, in any way! We wouldn't be able to metabolize food, our hearts wouldn't beat, our muscles wouldn't work, or pretty much anything else that our cells do every second of every day. Sorry, not really specific, but there is A LOT to them!

Because enzymes are catalysts that speed up chemical processes, therefore, without enzymes metabolic reactions would occur much slower which can lead to a delay in important processes, leading to death.

They are special proteins that speed up chemical reactions (e.g. digesting food) without being directly used up in the reaction.

Why are balancing things like temperature and acidity so important to living things?

Enzymes are protiens. If you get the balance of pH or temperature outof wack, you can change the shape of the enzyme. Changing the shape of the said enzyme damages the protein, so it cannot do its job. This is called denaturing.
