Marijuana is usually considered to be the main gateway drug, because when people want to experiment with recreational drugs, that is the one that they will try first. However, I believe that it is really tobacco which is the gateway drug. Almost everybody who tries smoking marijuana has smoked tobacco first. Once you get used to inhaling smoke, you can move on to other types of smoke. Alcohol also deserves to be considered a gateway drug.

From my experience the biggest gateway drug is alcohol, it introduces people to the 'party scene' and makes them feel safe using a mind altering substance because 'everyone does it'. Cannabis has often been called a gateway drug, from my experience this is more to do with the shady types you have to associate with to get it rather than the nature of the drug itself.

To say that Marijuana is a Gateway to Heroin is like saying Birth is a Gateway to Serial Killer, because EVERYONE who has done heroin has also smoked marijuana. What about the percentage of those out there that have smoked once, a few times, or thousands of times and have never tried anything else?
