Elemental, single element, diatomic gases, which form molecules but are not considered to be compounds are: H2, Cl2, O2, and others.

The reason that some elemental atoms bond diatomically is because they would be too unstable other wise, and probably couldn't exist as a gas. A hydrogen or oxygen atom, for example, could only exist in combination with something else. It is too unstable to exist alone. A covalent bond with another like atom is an ideal alternative.
