What is an inert/noble gas?

Noble elements (elements in the column 8 of the Periodic Table) are intrinsically inert and mostly in gaseous state at room temperature (298K) and atmospheric pressure. Helium (He), Neon (Ne) and Argon (Ar) three of them.
