The fuse is mounted in the fuse box in the right hand side of the engine bay. you will have to unclip the lid of the fuse box and the instrument cluster fuse is no.3
It is behind the instrument panel - you must remove the steering wheel, then the instrument cluster to get to it

I'm guessing that your seeing those letters in the instrument cluster? VDO is a gauge company, thatsupplies Mercedes Benz with some of there gauges, ie. tach, speedometer.

[] [] []========================================[] [] [] [] On the vertical edge of the instrument cluster where it touches the leather molding about half inch from the bottom push in the small end with the hook between the gap and turn the handle 90 degrees this will cause the tip to contact back frame of the cluster then pull towards you (hard)
On my 1998 E320 there are 1. fuses left of the instrument cluster facing the door, 2. fuses near the battery, and 3, under the hood on the driver's side

The same thing happened to my 84 300SD. I removed the instrument cluster to expose the ignition switch tumbler housing. I tapped the housing with a hammer while twisting the key in the ignition. When it finally popped loose, I removed the tumbler and ordered a new housing from Performance Products. The old units fail quite often, unfortunately.
