An interrogative pronoun is a word that introduces a question.

The interrogative pronouns are: who, whom, what, which, whose.

An interrogative pronoun, in most cases, takes the place of a noun or a noun phrase that is the answer to the question. Examples:

  • Who gave you the flowers? My neighbor gave me the flowers.
  • To whom do I give my completed application? Give it to the manager.
  • Which of these is your favorite? I like the green one.

Note: An interrogative pronoun can also function as a relative pronoun, a word that introduces a relative clause. A relative pronoun takes the place of the noun that it 'relates' to. Example:

  • Who gave you the flowers? My neighbor whohas a garden gave me the flowers.
