An open office plan - is typically a massive room with lots of smaller cubicles instead of individual offices. This type of layout is common in call centres (which is why you can usually hear lots of people talking in the background when you phone them !)

How may an open office help communication between staff?

An open office environment keeps emplyees feeling as though they 'belong' in a team. Single-occupancy offices isolate people. The only disadvantage of an open-plan office is an increased noise level. This can be bad if the company is a call-centre, as the person at the other end of the phone can hear what's going on in the background (and I speak from experience !).
