What is the difference between post code and zip code?

A zip code is the USPS mail routing code. It is 5 digits long and represents an area covering several thousand properties. For example 94103. A UK Postcode is a series of letters and numbers made up of an outcode (general area of post) and an incode (specific area within the outcode). Both can be up to 4 digits comprising letters and numbers. For example NR14 7PZ. The main difference in practice is that a UK Postcode has a much higher resolution in that any single Postcode can represent up to 100 addresses, rather than thousands like a US 5 digit Zip. For comparison purposes, the US Zip+4 9 digit Zip code is a closer match, but still not as accurate. Please remember though that the USA has a vastly larger geographical area and many millions more buildings to address, so the UK Postcode type system might not have been suitable. If you need further information, i work for a company that deals in address information, so feel free to send me a note.
