An unstable nuclide is a nucleus of an atom that has an unstable proton to neutron ratio and will therefore go through a process of decay until it reaches its 'ideal ratio', which is the ratio between protons and neutrons at which an element is most stabl.

Also, a nuclide could be unstable when having number of protons more than the maximum limit for number of protons for a nuclide to be stable. All nuclides with number of protons more than 83 are unstable and are naturally radioactive.
