Each independent city-state had its own government, with variances of monarchy, oligarchy and democracy.
oligarchy
A Greek city-state which was unbearably oppressed by its ruling oligarchy would appoint a tyrant to rule instead, the idea being that the tyrant would rule fairly for all classes.
Sparta is a city state, all of it was an oligarchy.
most of the greek city-states practiced oligarchy, including sparta and athens.
i think so.
The importance of Ancient Rome was the first city-state.
The most important thing to ancient Rome is difficult to pinpoint as there were many things that concerned the ancient Romans. However, one of the most important things, if not the most important thing to the Romans was the welfare of the state. If the state prospered, the Romans prospered. The most important thing to ancient Rome is difficult to pinpoint as there were many things that concerned the ancient Romans. sparta
First a king, then an aristocracy, then a tyrant, then a democracy, then an oligarchy, then a democracy, then an oligarchy, then a democracy, then a king.
It had limited fertile land divided by mountains. Incoming Greek tribes took over a section and later developed a city, which became a self-sustaining city-state, jealousy defending its independence.
Sparta was not an oligarchy (= rule by the few), it was a limited democracy with an assembly of male citizens who voted on matters put to them by the council. It could not be an oligarchy as the warriors had to have their say in the state, or simply would not fight for the state. The aristocracy knew this full well and gave them their say in assembly.
