Gabriel is one of three angels mentioned in The Bible by name with the other two being Michael and then Lucifer who became Satan. Many have interpreted this to mean these three ministerial spirit-beings are on the same 'level' and since Michael is the only one called an archangel by name (see Jude 1:9) it is presumed Gabriel is as well - albeit with a different job.
Of the 3 times Gabriel is mentioned, they all have something to do with the future. In Daniel 8 & 9, Gabriel explains end-time prophecies to Daniel. In Luke 1:19, he tells Zacharias of the soon to happen birth of his son John the Baptist. And the most well known time is in Luke 1:26 thru 32 of Gabriel's visiting the Virgin Mary telling her she would be the mother of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
From the above, it appears Gabriel is God's messenger bringing forth great announcements in the timeline of the reign of man.
