If the two of the three terminals on a Potentiometer are used, then it may be used as a variable resistor.

Answer

A variable resistor may function as a potentiometer (using three terminals) or as a rheostat (using two terminals). Its correct name is 'variable resistor', while the terms 'potentiometer' or 'rheostat' describe how it is being used.

Resistor is an electrical device which limits current in a circuit. It convert electrical energy into thermal energy and drops voltage.Conductor allow current to flow with little resistance. The resistive material in the resistor is not a good conductor and resist the current that wants to flow through it.

Variable resistor is such type of resistor whose resistance can be changed depending upon the need. They mostly used in electronic devices e.g a speaker.

They made of 60% copper and 40% nickel. While other resistors are made of carbon.
