Programming languages can be used to create operating systems software, device drivers, subsystem programs, applications and utilities. General-purpose languages such as C and C++ can cater for all of these areas while applications programming languages such as Java can only be used to create applications. Even then, Java's high resource usage and lack of performance makes it unsuitable for certain applications where speed and/or resource consumption is critical.
Applications are usually high-level programs and cover a wide range of disciplines including scientific applications (space exploration, nuclear, geothermal, geophysics, etc), industrial applications (computer-aided design and manufacture), accounting software, management (hotels, airport bookings, etc), multimedia (audio/video/image editing), general office applications (word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation), and so on. The list is literally endless.
Utility programs can also be thought of as being applications, however utilities often need to interact with hardware and operating systems at a much lower-level than applications software. Disk and file repair utilities, defrag programs, system monitors and search facilities are typical examples. General purpose languages such as C and C++ are better suited to this type of development.
