The New Zealand flag is a tri-coloured flag of blue, white, and red. The flag in its present form was officially approved in 1902. In the upper-left corner of the flag is the British Blue Ensign because New Zealand was a colony at that time and all colonies were ordered to fly the ensign with the seal of the colony included on the flag. The southern cross was added to the flag in 1869, after a demand from the then Governor. The Southern Cross constellation is only seen in the southern hemisphere and represents the location of New Zealand in the South Pacific ocean.
New Zealand Flag Institute was created in 2005.
