There are many ways to participate in one's government. The most common way is to vote in all elections, expressing your views by doing so. Another way is to work on a candidates campaign for election or reelection. Also, a person can run for public office. This can be at the local, state or federal level.
One way that a citizen can participate in a democracy is by voting for politicians.
Constitutionalism is the ideology of following the Constitution by the word regardless of what it says and supporting it. Democracy is the form of government that relies on the majority vote of the population. Democracy can be expressed in direct and representative forms.
Most democracies not have specific provision for referendums and in others there are limitations on the kinds of issues that can be put to a referendum. It would be a great mistake to regard referendums as the hallmark of a democracy.
It means more opportunites for one's voice to be heard.

Although democracy sounds fair and reasonable, it has the danger that the majority can persecute the minority. In order to make democracy a good thing, guarantees of human rights must be an added restriction to what the majority can vote in. The majority rules, but it can never take away these basic human rights.
There are many ways Americans can participate in their democracy. Three of these are: voting in Federal, State and local elections; running for office in Federal, State, or local elections; and communicating with our elected representatives concerning matters important to us.
