Best Answer

Bedfordshire lace was developed in the Bedford area of the UK as a way for bobbin lacemakers to compete with the newly invented machines. The name is often shortened to "Beds" making some believe it is used for bedding. This is not true.

It incorporates designs that cannot easily be copied by a machine, making the lace more valuable than machine lace. It also is made using an innovative technique that uses one long piece of thread, therefore, no cutting and taping the various sections together.
