Social contact is no more limited than solitary contemplation. A hermit can never be as informed as social beings, as all that is learned from social contact, the hermit remains largely ignorant of. No matter what has been contemplated, alone and away from others, it was contemplated while away from others and in solitude and that brings its own limitations. We are beings who operate best, who make choices and actions that are good and just, when we are operating on more than one level. When in solitude we operate primarily on a selfish level, when with family and spouse or lover we operate on two levels, the politics of self and the politics of family. When we are with a group of people we operate on three levels, self, family and the group. When we are with a group and we are concerned with more than just the three first levels of beingness we are looking at a fourth level. That level is the whole of us as a people, humanity. There are more levels, of course, spiritual and beyond but too few of us ever achieve operating on more than two or three levels at a time. For all our vaunted ability to multi-task, those actions have, sadly, been defined as the ability to complete several physical chores at once. That kind of ability can be accomplished when operating on just one level of beingness. A serial killer is more than capable of multi-tasking, hard to believe that killer is operating on any other level than the politics of self, and what horrible politics that killer employs.Social contact is essential for us as beings if we are ever to accomplish some form of greatest good. If ever we are to finally achieve our full potential it won't be because we alienated others, avoided others and mistrust others. The problem with trusting others is our profound ability to deceive and if we ourselves our shameless liars it is certain we will tend to be mistrustful of others. Sun Tsu said in the Art of War: "All warfare is based on deception." Remarkably profound in its simplicity it informs us of why war should be avoided at all costs. It is no coincidence that actions based on deception lead to horrid death and untold destruction. In his analysis of war Clausewitz said in On War, that war is just an extension of failed politics. Politics. This is what we do when dealing with other people, we engage in politics. Many of the choices and actions we make are political ones. Not just who we will elect as Prime Minister or President or Governor, not who we will elect as Mayor or Alderman but who we will have dinner with, who we will pray with if we pray, who we will grant our allegiance to and who we merely befriend or who we maintain as a casual acquaintance.
