I have both of these, and personally, I would say that the 3ds is slightly better than the dsi xl. This is because:
-It is the only 3d gaming console
-The graphics are strong and very realistic
-You can use the AR cards to play mini games
-It has a Mii plaza and streetpass, so that you can exchange mii's while you walk around
-you can take 3d pictures
The only thing the 3ds lacks is size.
To be honest, I think that my 3ds was a waste of money, and I tend to play on my XL a lot more often.
