You bet ... depending on the type of timpani (aka kettle drum) and its note range, it can be up to three (3) times larger, and much much heavier.

depends...usually the kettle drum. However, both range in size, so there may be some instances where a bass is bigger than a very high pitched kettle

What is a tom in a drum set?

It's the drum, or set of drums that are taller (usually) than the snare drum and have more of a pitch or defined note. The bass drum can even be considered a tom. It's just (usually) a lot bigger! One of my friends even used a floor tom as a bass drum on his jazz kit once.

Is a snare drum the loudest?

It really depends on the type fo snare drum. For example parade drums are meant to be loud, but piccolo is a quieter drum due to its size. In the drum family, yes it probably is the loudest in perspective, but depending on how hard you hit it, it could be the bass drum as well.

What percussion instrument is unpitched?

A percussion instrument with no pitch is (obviously) a percussion instrument, but with no recognisable note in any scale, producing a beat rather than a note. Examples of these instruments are snare drum, bass drum, tomtom drum etc.

When you hit your floor tom your snare drum rings how do you stop the ringing?

This has always been a pressing issue for drummers. Honestly, there really is no way to completely eliminate the buzz from your snares unless you turn them off all together. Whenever I do licks on just my tom-toms, bass drum, and cymbals (not using the snare at all) I always flip of the snares until I need them again. This is the best method. However, if you are moving between the snare and floor tom then I would suggest you get a close friend (preferably another percussionist) to stand several yards away (wherever the audience will be) and tell you if he can hear the snare's buzz. Most of the time the audience can't even recognize the snare buzz. What we hear over the drum set is WAY different than what the audience hears. If it is still an issue for you then, as a last resort, you can tighten the snares all together.

What are the five major characteristics of dance music of the 80's?

1) Bass guitar and synthesized sound were louder than drums and lead melody. 2) The drums were mostly programmed on some drum machine, featuring many varied sounds of drums (not just kick, snare/clap and cymbals), often with heavily reverberated snare drum. The drum patterns were more varied. 3) The melodies were slower, thin and unnatural sounding, often made on synthesizers. 4) There was a lot of variation in drum pattern composition, used sounds. 5) Dance songs often featured instrumental breaks.

What sound of drum?

An example is: Sounds on a snare drum can be described as a "crack" or a "snap" further defined by "quick" or "short". A piccolo snare tuned tight will give you a "short crack". Some cymbals are named after their sound like "crash" or "splash" cymbals. Cymbals can be further defined by "washy", "thrashy", "is cutting"....
